The group discovers a strangled man in his car on the highway while traveling in Kogoro's rental vehicle. They stop to investigate after the police halt traffic at a toll gate. Shinichi and Heiji determine the victim died while driving based on body temperature. By analyzing toll ticket times, they narrow suspects to three individuals connected to the victim, a former street racer known as Gunpei. Gunpei retired after causing the death of a man named Akira during a race, giving each suspect a motive. The detectives notice holes near the driver's seat window, revealing the method used to commit the murder.
