Kogoro, Ran, and Conan visit a traditional ryokan where they encounter three college girls taking photographs. Conan observes that the water mill has been converted into an ice house. After the girls depart, Ran and Conan notice the river turning red. They discover the body of Akiba Yuko floating with red flowers on her. Conan identifies the flowers as Azolla Japonica, a fern that grows in lakes. Police initially suspect accidental drowning based on the victim's phone. Conan, however, believes this is a murder and begins his investigation to uncover the true culprit responsible for the crime.
