Devastated by Jiraiya's death at Pain's hands, Naruto retreats to recall his mentor. Fukasaku presents Jiraiya's chakra-encrypted code to Tsunade, who tasks Shikamaru with having the village's best code breaker translate it. Shikamaru deduces the cipher may be known to someone Jiraiya knew. The following day, Shikamaru visits Naruto to offer comfort, revealing that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma's child. He urges Naruto to stop acting like children and instead become the best versions of themselves, fulfilling the potential their mentors saw in them. This segment is part of the Pain's Assault arc.
