Amidst rising workloads, Danzo promotes Itachi to captain, replacing him in the Anbu with Yugao. Itachi thanks Kakashi for his past support, ignoring warnings against political involvement. Kakashi later consults Hiruzen about an undetected village intruder bypassing security codes, enlisting Guy to help investigate the Uchiha district's tense atmosphere. Itachi reports an impending Uchiha revolt to Danzo, receiving an unofficial order to eliminate his family for the village's sake. That night, Itachi meets a masked figure claiming to be Madara Uchiha. With this assistance, Itachi slaughters the clan, sparing only Sasuke. As Anbu members clean up the aftermath while Itachi is vilified, he threatens Danzo to protect Sasuke. Itachi secretly meets Hiruzen, pledging to protect Konoha from the shadows and hoping Sasuke will restore clan honor. Hiruzen maintains the barrier code, allowing Itachi free movement if Sasuke is endangered. Kakashi is informed his Anbu service has ended, and he will become a mentor.
