Upon arriving at Cinnabar Island, Ash, Brock, and Misty discover the Gym is closed due to excessive tourism. Desperate for his seventh badge, Ash consults a riddle master who guides him to the facility hidden within the island's volcano. The guide reveals himself as Blaine, the actual Gym Leader. Ash battles Blaine, losing with Squirtle and having Pikachu refuse to fight Rhydon. Pikachu eventually defeats Rhydon, but Blaine introduces Magmar as a secret weapon. Magmar's attacks neutralize Pikachu's electric moves, forcing the Electric Mouse toward the battlefield's edge. The episode concludes with Magmar charging Fire Blast, leaving Pikachu's fate uncertain in a dramatic cliffhanger.
