During their travels, Ash realizes he has not earned a Badge in a while, prompting Todd to recommend the Pokémon League exam for immediate competition entry. Overconfident in his abilities, Ash fails the initial two stages of the assessment. The third test is disrupted when Team Rocket intervenes, deploying their Pokémon to retaliate against the examiner for the difficulties faced in the previous rounds. The examiner counters this by ordering his Pokémon to attack Team Rocket rather than himself, resulting in the villains being blasted off once again.
