Rio departs the People of the Spirits village for his parents' homeland, Yaugumo, after failing to locate them. He meets Yuba, the head of a small village in the Karasuki Kingdom, who is shocked to learn his parents' names and reveals a deep connection to him. Following her advice, Rio chooses to reside in the village, establishing a peaceful life with the locals, including his cousin Ruri and a girl named Sayo. As autumn approaches, the group learns that a tax examiner is coming to assess their annual tribute. Tensions rise when Sayo's older brother, Shin, engages in a physical altercation with men from an adjacent village, disrupting their quiet existence.
