Shiki Tohno could perceive lines that destroy objects and people upon contact, but a sorceress provided glasses to hide these visions, allowing a normal existence. Following his father's death, Shiki returns to live with his sister, Akiha Tohno. While discussing recent serial killings with school friends Satsuki Yumizuka, Arihiko Inui, and Ciel, he encounters a woman on his commute home. This meeting triggers a dreamlike sequence during which he kills her. Shiki wakes up in his sister's house, yet the following day, he sees the same woman again while traveling to school.
