Following his father's death, Shiki returns to live with his sister, Akiha Tohno. While discussing recent serial killings with school friends Satsuki Yumizuka, Arihiko Inui, and Ciel, he encounters a woman on his commute home. This meeting triggers a dreamlike sequence during which he kills her. Shiki wakes up in his sister's house, yet the following day, he sees the same woman again while traveling to school.
