Ep. 1: Nagate Tanikaze joins Sidonia's Guardian pilot training after escaping capture

Starving on the spaceship Sidonia, Nagate Tanikaze is caught stealing rice and escapes hospital custody. He is taken to Captain Kobayashi, who makes Shizuka Hoshijiro his guardian on the condition he joins the Guardian pilot training program. Nagate learns the pilots defend against the Gauna, an alien threat last seen a hundred years ago. He befriends Izana Shinatose, a genderless cadet, but struggles with the Type 18 Guardian simulator controls. Assigned to the legendary Type 17 unit Tsugumori instead of the preferred Type 18, Nagate finds the controls familiar. During a mining operation on a nearby asteroid, a Gauna emerges from the rock, marking the first appearance in a century. Identified as Gauna 487, the creature attacks the group. The episode concludes with Nagate injured and the Tsugumori heavily damaged by the sudden assault.
