EP 1Nagate Tanikaze joins Sidonia's Guardian pilot training after escaping capture
Apr 11, 2014Starving on the spaceship Sidonia, Nagate Tanikaze is caught stealing rice and escapes hospital custody. He is taken to Captain Kobayashi, who makes Shizuka Hoshijiro his guardian on the condition he joins the Guardian pilot training program. Nagate learns the pilots defend against the Gauna, an alien threat last seen a hundred years ago. He befriends Izana Shinatose, a genderless cadet, but struggles with the Type 18 Guardian simulator controls. Assigned to the legendary Type 17 unit Tsugumori instead of the preferred Type 18, Nagate finds the controls familiar. During a mining operation on a nearby asteroid, a Gauna emerges from the rock, marking the first appearance in a century. Identified as Gauna 487, the creature attacks the group. The episode concludes with Nagate injured and the Tsugumori heavily damaged by the sudden assault.

Apr 18, 2014Pilot Eiko Yamano is killed and absorbed by a Gauna, which then assumes her shape. Nagate regains consciousness and engages this entity in combat, defying orders to retreat after Sidonia fires its Heavy Mass Cannon. Although he lacks weapons capable of destroying the Gauna, he withdraws as the projectile successfully repels the creature. Cadets return safely, and a funeral is held for Yamano, with high command declaring that Sidonia is once again at war. Three days later, Nagate remains deeply disturbed, struggling to sleep or eat despite his bones healing. He is still required to wear casts. Meanwhile, the four highest-ranking veteran pilots, led by Mochikuni Akai, arrive at the academy. Cadets, including Kunato, expect the veterans to visit them, but Akai ignores them entirely. Instead, Akai approaches Nagate, which infuriates Kunato.

Apr 25, 2014Cadets question Nagate about his Gauna combat, but he rests during the Gravity Festival. Akai defeats Kunato in a pilot contest, using data Yuhata Midorikawa hacked from Nagate’s records. Nagate spends time with Shizuka, causing Izana distress and leading to a fight where Kunato injures her and Nagate. Captain Kobayashi detects Gauna 487 approaching Sidonia and assigns Akai’s squad to intercept it. Before the mission, Akai invites the recovering Nagate and Izana for a sea ride. The following day, Akai, Momose Hinata, Aoki Kashiwade, and Izumo Midorikawa depart to engage the enemy. The operation fails catastrophically, resulting in the death of all participating pilots.

May 2, 2014Following the destruction of the Akai squad, the Gauna approaches Sidonia, prompting Captain Kobayashi to execute a level 5 diagonal acceleration. This evasive action results in severe casualties within the residential sector. As the Gauna reorients its attack, Kobayashi deploys guardians and assigns Kunato, Shizuka, En Honoka, and Nagate to recover the Kabizashi weapon from the fallen squad. Upon retrieval, Gauna 487 targets the team with a Heigus particle cannon, disabling all units except Nagate’s Tsugumori. When Shizuka’s unit malfunctions, she ejects, leaving Nagate to disobey towing orders. He instead engages the Gauna directly with the Kabizashi, destroying it effortlessly. While others celebrate, Nagate ignores warnings and departs to rescue Shizuka, moving beyond Sidonia’s reach.

The Kabi catalyst was found 600 years ago by a strike force including Kobayashi, Hiyama, Hiroki Saito, and Ochiai. Nagate recounts his underground life and beating his grandfather's Type 17 console score at age six. After spending over three weeks in the derelict Tsugumori with dwindling supplies, they are rescued by 256 guardian pilots who disobeyed the captain's orders.

May 16, 2014Nagate and Shizuka return to Sidonia as heroes, leading to promotions for Nagate, Shizuka, Kunato, and En Honoka as official Guardian pilots. Kunato apologizes for past behavior, and Nagate questions Captain Kobayashi about his upbringing and healing speed, but she urges him to continue his work. During a party, Yuhata invites Nagate on an underwater ride, but he ends up alone with Shizuka in a bathysphere. Their time is interrupted by a large Gauna pod approaching Sidonia. Nagate departs to confront the Gauna 488 with Shizuka. He later wakes in the hospital to learn that Shizuka was killed in the battle.

The Captain orders a planet destroyed where surviving Gauna fled. Yuhata, now Executive Officer, succeeds, but Gauna 489, 490, and 491 emerge. The Captain orders a squad, including Nagate, to intercept them. Shockingly, the Gauna appear as Guardians with unit number 702, formerly Shizuka's callsign.

Nakazono squad fights Gauna 490, which mimics Shizuka’s voice to kill members, causing Kunato panic and Ho Honoka’s death. Gauna 490, later named Benisuzume, retreats when Nagate appears. Pilots mourn five KIA companions. Captain Kobayashi faces Lala’s criticism regarding Nagate’s frequent sorties. Kobayashi reveals Nagate’s immortality and his status as a liability to the Immortal Ship Crew, citing his late friend Saito’s skills. Lala recalls the Fourth Defensive War 100 years ago, where only 392 citizens and 25 council members survived, including herself, Kobayashi, Saito, and Ochiai. Ochiai was spared execution after copying archive files to his brain before deletion. These files were moved to a clone’s brain. Saito disappeared, reappearing 80 years later as an aged man after renouncing immortality. Kobayashi cloned Saito to preserve his memory, creating Nagate. Saito refused mind transfer, kidnapping infant Nagate with Lala’s help to teach piloting. The Gauna sample resembles Shizuka and speaks Nagate’s name.

Jun 6, 2014The narrative shifts from the past, where Doctor Yure restores Sidonia’s population to 500,000 over 100 years, to the present. Nagate and Izana observe Placenta Shizuka, a Gauna placenta resembling Shizuka. Scientist Numi Tahiro tests Nagate’s interaction with the entity, which initially reacts violently but gradually becomes less hostile as Nagate communicates with it. Meanwhile, Kunato, having stepped down from piloting due to psychological distress, witnesses Captain Kobayashi, Dr. Yure, and Ochiai’s clone accessing the auxiliary brain. Kunato learns about Ochiai’s past ambitions through security footage. Kobayashi plans to relocate anti-war protesters to the 7th planet in the Lem star system if 50,000 volunteers emerge. Nagate, promoted to squad leader, achieves victories against Gauna, including an H-1 class Guana 492. He eventually agrees to a vacation with Izana. Numi discovers Placenta Shizuka stares fearfully at the kabizashi storage site, a location also observed by Benisuzume in the distance.

Yuhata shares intel on Ochiai’s condemned research, leading the trio to a classified facility. They are sedated by security, and Nagate meets Yure, who confirms Ochiai created a Gauna-Human hybrid. This hybrid produces artificial kabi to destroy Gauna, reducing reliance on Kabizahi. Both the hybrid and Kabizahi emit radiation attracting Gauna to Sidonia. Kobayashi names Nagate the test pilot for new weapons. Kunato discovers a forbidden door. Nagate returns to the inn with amnesiac companions. A pacifist colonization ship departs, claiming Gauna avoid unarmed humans. Nagate trains at Toha Heavy Industries using his grandfather’s old simulator. When Gauna 541 intercepts the ship, Nagate volunteers to pilot untested prototypes lacking stabilization. He destroys the Gauna after recovering from recoil. Later, Izana becomes a pilot and fears her short lifespan, running away in distress before Nagate saves her. A massive Gauna pod, 8,000 times Sidonia’s size, approaches.

Jun 20, 2014Gauna pod 542 targets Sidonia, prompting Yuhata to attempt evasion with thrust level 2, which fails as the enemy adjusts its trajectory. The Captain authorizes 48 guardian frames equipped with experimental placenta-piercing weaponry. Nagate and Izana join Platoon 1, arriving two hours before the anti-planetary missile, while Platoon 2 targets the propulsion. Platoon 1 suffers heavy losses when the placenta morphs into Heigus cannons, and Platoon 2 is wiped out by Benisuzume. With only 14 Guardians remaining and one hour left, Yuhata proposes firing Sidonia’s super Heigus particle cannon at the Gauna head. This requires diverting all power, leaving the ship defenseless. The Captain approves, and Sidonia fires the cannon, allowing the remaining pilots to infiltrate the structure and destroy the controlling Master Gauna.

Jun 27, 2014After the Heigus beam impact, damaged pilots regroup to breach the enemy placenta. Ren Honoka gives Nagate her final core-piercing projectile to defeat Benisuzume and avenge Hou, then withdraws with unit 314. Nagate duels Benisuzume, losing consciousness until Izana saves him but gets injured herself. Nagate fires Tsugumori's left hand containing Ren's projectile to destroy Benisuzume. Meanwhile, Samari's platoon enters the Gauna pod. Pilot Kōichi Tsuruuchi uses his last Heigus to break the final barrier, allowing the group to destroy the Master Gauna's core. Samari, Seii, and Tsuruuchi escape as an anti-planetary missile destroys the target. On Sidonia, Ren thanks Nagate for avenging Hou and reveals she and her sisters are only five years old due to accelerated growth. Nagate visits Kunato, who plans to quit; Nagate expresses a desire to fight alongside him despite unresolved feelings, but Kunato departs without reply. Nagate then seeks Placenta Shizuka, unaware she has left the lab.
