Ep. 2: Nagate confronts Gauna in Yamano's form while veteran pilots visit the academy.
Pilot Eiko Yamano is killed and absorbed by a Gauna, which then assumes her shape. Nagate regains consciousness and engages this entity in combat, defying orders to retreat after Sidonia fires its Heavy Mass Cannon. Although he lacks weapons capable of destroying the Gauna, he withdraws as the projectile successfully repels the creature. Cadets return safely, and a funeral is held for Yamano, with high command declaring that Sidonia is once again at war. Three days later, Nagate remains deeply disturbed, struggling to sleep or eat despite his bones healing. He is still required to wear casts. Meanwhile, the four highest-ranking veteran pilots, led by Mochikuni Akai, arrive at the academy. Cadets, including Kunato, expect the veterans to visit them, but Akai ignores them entirely. Instead, Akai approaches Nagate, which infuriates Kunato.
