Nagate locates Shizuka, but Tsugumori loses power, leaving them stranded in space. Lala Hiyama urges Kobayashi to organize a search, which she refuses. History lessons cover Gauna's 2109 arrival, Sidonia's 2384 launch, and the 2691 Aposims contact. The Kabi catalyst was found 600 years ago by a strike force including Kobayashi, Hiyama, Hiroki Saito, and Ochiai. Nagate recounts his underground life and beating his grandfather's Type 17 console score at age six. After spending over three weeks in the derelict Tsugumori with dwindling supplies, they are rescued by 256 guardian pilots who disobeyed the captain's orders.
