Maka, Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki face expulsion if they fail a remedial class to atone for missed souls. Their assignment involves battling Sid Barrett, a former teacher transformed into a zombie by Dr. Franken Stein. During the encounter, Maka and Soul attempt their Soul Resonance, Witch Hunter, but fail to control the technique effectively. Consequently, Black Star relies on Tsubaki's chain to subdue the powerful meister. After capturing Sid, Lord Death reveals that Stein, the most powerful graduate of Death Weapon Meister Academy, is responsible for Sid's undead state.
