Three individuals—Kirito, Eugeo, and Alice—have experienced significant change following the defeat of the pontifex, the game's administrator. Six months later, Alice resides in her village, Rulid, with Kirito, who has lost both his arm and his former companion. As Alice focuses on caring for him, she has also lost her former determination as a knight. A major stress test is approaching, one expected to bring widespread disaster to the Underworld. Simultaneously, the Dark God Vecta has returned in the Dark Territory, leading a force to invade the human empire in pursuit of the Priestess of Light. The Integrity Knight Bercouli leads the human forces in preparation for a massive conflict. However, neither Alice nor the two previous heroes are present to aid in the coming battle.
