The fleet advisor warns the Captain that aliens are attacking Earth. While Coach trains Noriko, Jung challenges her to a duel to test her resolve. Outside, Noriko breaks down due to trauma from her comrade's death. As the fleet prepares to jump to Earth via subspace to hide their trail, they are suddenly attacked by the aliens. Everyone scrambles for their mechs, but Noriko is benched for the battle. With most defense forces wiped out and the situation looking bleak, Noriko overcomes her emotional rut. She decides to pilot the force's super prototype mech, Gunbuster, to turn the tide of the conflict.
