A race of large, insect-like aliens is encountered in the galaxy, seemingly intent on destroying humanity as it expands beyond the solar system. In response, humans develop space battleships and giant mechs, piloted by selected students from training academies worldwide. The narrative starts in 2023, following early conflicts with the aliens, and focuses on Noriko Takaya, a student at one such academy. Her father, a renowned fleet captain, died in an early battle, but her piloting abilities are uncertain. Alongside Kazumi Amano, a skilled and accomplished pilot, Noriko struggles with wartime trauma, skepticism from others, and personal insecurity throughout the series.
