Askeladd interrogates a captured English captain for intelligence but is interrupted by the arrival of Thorkell. Terrified of defeat, several of Askeladd's soldiers attempt to defect and join Thorkell, only to be executed upon arrival. Askeladd retreats to the shallow upper Severn River, where he destroys a small bridge to hinder his pursuers. Despite these efforts, Thorkell catches up to them. The confrontation leads to a crisis of confidence among Askeladd's troops, who begin to question his leadership capabilities. This doubt culminates in a full-scale mutiny against Askeladd as he struggles to maintain control over his forces amidst the immediate threat.
