Thorfinn engages in a duel with Thorkell to determine Askeladd's destiny. Meanwhile, Canute lies motionless in the snow, recalling a vision of Ragnar who apologizes for raising him as a son rather than a prince. Upon waking, Canute discusses love and discrimination with a priest, leading to a personal epiphany. He resolves to face his circumstances directly, calming the berserker Bjorn who was stabbed by Atli, one of Askeladd's men. Canute instructs the priest to treat Bjorn's wounds while he accepts the responsibility of becoming king. The duel continues as Thorkell kicks Thorfinn, sending him crashing into nearby trees.
