Ep. 19: Jigoro Recalls His Youthful Romance and Dojo Struggles on His Wife's Death Anniversary
On Kaneko's fifteenth death anniversary, Jigoro recounts his arrival in 1934 after defeating 230 kumas. He joins Kyuudou-kan Dojo, finding it mismanaged by Kaneko due to debts owed to creditor Simonji. Jigoro falls for Kaneko but drives away two students through harsh training. He is beaten by rivals after promising not to use judo. When Kaneko is forced to marry Simonji, Jigoro interrupts the ceremony, defeating opponents despite his promise. Kaneko knocks him out for breaking his word, causing Simonji to fall into a fountain and ruin the debt contract. Jigoro identifies the novelist as Yoshinokawa Eiichi, who later published Miyamoto Mushashi. Yawara disputes this account, citing a previous version with different characters and references.
