Kuniko reports to Japan that both Yawara and Fujiko have reached the semifinals, though Fujiko faces the formidable Teleshikova in the free weight division. Teleshikova dismisses Fujiko as insignificant, but Fujiko focuses solely on not being a burden to Yawara. Following Yawara’s advice to disrupt Teleshikova’s rhythm early, Fujiko earns a waza ari and later a yuko as her opponent loses composure. Meanwhile, Fujiko’s parents, lacking live coverage, worry about her performance in the free weight contest. They doubt her chances of winning first place but find optimism when a tea stem floats vertically in their cup, hoping she might succeed.
