Ep. 90: Jigoro recalls his past friendship with American judoka Davis before the 1936 Olympics
Jigoro shares a semi-fictional story with friends while celebrating Yawara's new gold medal from Belgrade. The narrative begins in 1936 after Jigoro won his first Japan Judo Championship. Davis, a cheerful blond American giant, challenges the dojo and becomes Jigoro's student, nicknamed Debeso. They bond over eating contests and tall tales. Davis later becomes a famous heavyweight wrestler and discusses the Berlin Olympics. Despite enduring rigorous training, he is expelled after giving Kaneko a misinterpreted kiss. After defeating a dozen rivals, Davis fights Jigoro for three hours. Jigoro releases an arm hold to allow Davis to travel to Berlin unharmed, sparking Jigoro's interest in Olympic gold, which judo would not debut in until 1992 in Barcelona.
