Following the New Year, Maria addresses the group's mental sluggishness using a manzai comedy routine. Nozomu Itoshiki notes that factors like jet lag contribute to this state, prompting Maria to extend her critique to Japan's national security policies during peacetime. In the subsequent segment, Nozomu conducts a surprise inspection of the student body. Maria and Chiri assist by photographing students during vulnerable private moments. While Nozomu’s colleague Jinroku remains unaffected by the scrutiny, Kafuka Fuura suggests that carelessness can be an appealing trait that elicits sympathy. Chiri attempts to capitalize on this theory by deliberately acting careless, a decision that inadvertently places numerous characters in serious peril.
