A quiet boy who expresses himself through haikus meets a girl who conceals her face behind a mask at a mall in a small Japanese city during summer. The boy speaks only in haikus, while the girl hides her front teeth behind braces. As they grow closer, they meet an elderly haiku expert who is losing his memory and searching for a specific record. He believes hearing it might help him recall something important. The boy and the girl decide to assist him in his search. The story follows their journey during that summer, centered around the shopping mall.
