Shakugan no Shana

A boy named Yuji Sakai experiences a sudden disruption to his ordinary life when he encounters a girl with red hair and eyes, whom he calls Shana. On his way home, he witnesses people trapped in an unusual fire and attacked by a monster resembling a large doll. As he is about to be killed, a cloaked girl with a large sword appears and defeats the creature. She tells him that his existence has been consumed and that he is now a "Torch," a temporary substitute. She identifies herself as a Flame Haze, a being that hunts intruders from another world known as "Guze no Tomogara." Yuji learns he is a rare type of Torch called a "Mystes," containing a valuable object. Upon looking at his chest, he sees a faint flame as she described. This marks the beginning of his ongoing journey with the girl.
