Ashita no Joe

A young man named Joe Yabuki flees an orphanage and ends up in the Tokyo slums, where he meets a former boxing coach named Danpei. After being arrested, Joe is sent to a temporary jail where he fights Nishi, who becomes his future friend and the leader of a gang. They are then transferred to a juvenile prison far from Tokyo. There, Joe meets Rikiishi, a former boxing talent, and a rivalry forms between them. During a match, Rikiishi overwhelms Joe until he lands a cross-counter, knocking both of them out. The fight motivates other prisoners to take up boxing. Joe and Rikiishi agree to face each other again.
