Yukio criticizes Rin for relying on demonic abilities rather than intellect, noting his inability to perform simple tasks. After receiving a call, Yukio departs to handle Kuro, a cat sídhe familiar who has gone berserk following the death of his master, Shiro. Rin accompanies him despite objections. Confronting the familiar, Rin hears Kuro’s sorrow and learns the creature was once a guardian deity for silkworm breeders before becoming a demon after its shrine was demolished. Shiro had previously calmed Kuro without harm. Rin chooses to face Kuro alone, using his head to soothe the entity, resulting in friendship. Yukio then provides Kuro with silver vine sake left by Shiro for safekeeping.
