Following the end of the first semester, True Cross Academy students engage in a three-day combat preparation drill disguised as a camping trip. While the male students erect tents, the female students construct a summoning circle around the campsite. Rin reflects on Shiro’s teachings about helping others after sharing his meal with the class. Yukio assigns the group a mission to locate and light one of three hidden lanterns within three days to qualify for future missions. During a swarm of moth-like demons known as chuchis, Rin saves Shiemi using his blue flames, a sight potentially witnessed by Ryuji. After Renzo joins them, Konekomaru alerts the group to a peg lantern, a demon that consumes living beings, particularly women, when illuminated at night. The five students collaborate to move the lantern across a fragile bridge, but Rin accidentally destroys the structure, awakening a giant chuchi.
