Following the academy's closure, the Exwires launch Operation Jacob's Ladder to eradicate demons in Assiah using blood-draining weapons. While Yukio pursues this mission to destroy Gehenna and restore humanity, Rin questions the True Cross Order's extreme tactics. After Yukio kills a yamakujira demon, an enraged Rin is arrested and encounters Mephisto, who reveals his past with the Polish laboratory and Neuhaus. Ernst sentences Rin to death as a sacrifice to open the Gehenna Gate. During the ensuing chaos, Shura battles Arthur to buy time, but when classmates arrive to help, they discover that Yukio’s demonic powers have also awakened.
