Tetsu, proprietor of Black Jack's preferred cafe, narrates his history as a renowned pickpocket pursued by a relentless detective. During an escape, Tetsu suffers an accident involving sheet glass that results in the loss of two fingers. The detective coerces Black Jack into performing surgery to reattach the digits, aiming to resume his previous lifestyle. However, Black Jack intervenes to protect Tetsu. Later, Tetsu repays this kindness by assisting Black Jack when the detective attempts to arrest him for practicing medicine without a license.
