One hundred and ten years before the series start, Sousuke Aizen, then fifth division lieutenant, learns of preparations for the new twelfth division captain. Yoruichi Shihouin informs Kisuke Urahara of her recommendation while sparring. Soi Fon, distrustful of Urahara, follows him to prove his unworthiness, but Yoruichi dismisses her evidence as a love letter. Urahara and Soul Reapers pursue deserters who left the Seireitei voluntarily. After resolving the situation, Urahara passes the qualification exam and attends the captains' meeting. This segment is labeled as part one of seven in The Past arc.
