Nine years after mysterious disappearances plague the Rukongai, Shinigami leaders gather to investigate. Kensei Muguruma and his Ninth Division are deployed, encountering a massive Hollow that attacks civilians. Kensei rescues a young Shuuhei Hisagi from the creature. Meanwhile, Hiyori is transferred from the Twelfth Division to assist Mayuri and Urahara in their laboratory. Kensei’s squad camps in the woods to find clues, but subordinate Toudou seemingly kills Kaname Tousen before being defeated. Left alone, Kensei is trapped in a dark well and impaled by a blade. As the darkness fades, he finally recognizes his attacker.
