Kisuke Urahara is appointed captain of the 12th Division during a ceremony attended by other captains, where he introduces himself to his squad. Lieutenant Hiyori Sarugaki remains unfriendly, causing a disturbance while moving his belongings and challenging him to a duel to test his promise to protect the division. The squad believes Urahara lost due to weakness, but he actually threw the match to avoid humiliating Hiyori. That night, Hirako explains to Urahara that Hiyori viewed the previous captain like a mother and will be hard to replace. The following day, Hiyori discovers Urahara has significantly altered his office compared to his predecessor.
