Yachiru Kusajishi meets Masayoshi, who saved Mayu from a hollow. Masayoshi shares his story about a hollow killing his wife, and Mayu, whose parents died by the same creature, feels connected to him. Yachiru recalls Masayoshi’s past closeness and visits them again. Masayoshi kills another hollow and plans to leave, with Mayu asking to join him. Yachiru privately warns Mayu against getting too close. The next day, Masayoshi protects Mayu from hollows and asks her to travel with him. Yachiru intervenes, revealing Kenpachi’s warning that a hollow possessed Masayoshi, evidenced by his lost love for sweets and forgotten wife’s name. She claims he accidentally killed his wife and mistook himself for another hollow. Masayoshi panics and begins transforming. A hollow attacks Mayu, and Masayoshi saves her, fatally wounding himself. He dies happily in Mayu’s arms after eating konpeitou from Yachiru.
