Despite understanding Mr. McGregor’s loneliness, the headmaster remains demanding. Headmistress Merry Jane commends Candy for her hard work and provides letters from Saint Paul's Academy friends. Alistear lost interest in inventions after a disappearance, while Archibald, who had not changed clothes for five days, wishes her well. Patricia writes of a zoo outing with Alistear, a visit to her turtle Yuli, and hopes to visit the US. Meanwhile, Annie fears the potential war with Germany and desires to return to America. As doctors and nurses struggle to keep Mr. McGregor alive during his crisis, he repeatedly calls for Miena. Candy visits his old mansion to find Miena, who is revealed to be a Saint Bernard sitting on the back porch.
