Franny cares for a special guest while Candy follows prankster patients' advice to smile instead of moping. Her cheerful attitude makes other student nurses envious. Candy finds Franny crying but is rejected when she asks questions. The next day, Candy sees Franny rush out with the patient insisting he is not a servant, though Franny pretends everything is fine. Learning he is rich, owns land near a lake, and is named William, Candy believes he is her benefactor, grandfather William Ardley. She begs to take Franny's place. Reluctantly, Franny agrees without losing face. The next day, Dr. Frank explains the room situation to Candy, instructing her to speak softly before stepping out and wishing her good luck.
