Matthew delivers an engagement invitation from Mr. Steave to Tom, who refuses the arranged marriage at age seventeen. Candy attempts to negotiate with Mr. Steave but meets the eight-year-old fiancée, Diana, at the ranch. Unable to take the engagement seriously, Candy delays her conversation. During dinner, Tom declares his love for Candy, hurting Diana and damaging the family reputation. Mr. Steave, believing he is dying without medical confirmation, now demands a celebration for Candy and Tom’s engagement instead.
