Candy travels to a bustling city to attend Merry Jane Nursing school. On the way, she helps an elderly woman cross the street and escorts her to Joseph Hospital. The woman reveals knowledge of Candy’s past and warns her about the profession's difficulties. Before meeting the headmistress, Candy encounters the same woman again, who provides a demanding tour. While buying food, Candy uses her shawl to cover a sleeping vagrant. When the vagrant disappears, Candy searches for the shawl and arrives late to her appointment. The headmistress is revealed to be the old woman, who tested Candy’s compassion. Later, Candy meets her roommate Franny, who is studious and dislikes excessive conversation, dampening Candy's hopes for friendship.
