Dororo accompanies Hyakkimaru, who explains that Jukai-sensei rescued him as an infant and crafted prostheses to mimic normalcy. Hyakkimaru learned he must defeat 48 demons possessing his body parts to become fully human. Jukai-sensei gifted him a sword from a general, which was embedded in his prosthetic arm. During his journey, Hyakkimaru met the blind monk Zatou, who guided him to a war-damaged orphanage. There, Hyakkimaru trained and fell in love with Mio. Tragically, local samurai burned the orphanage, killing Mio and the children. Consumed by rage, Hyakkimaru slaughtered all the samurai involved, destroying his peaceful dreams in the process.
