Hyakkimaru’s Origin Story and First Encounter with Dororo
Apr 6, 1969At Cloud Dragon Temple, warlord Daigo Kagemitsu sacrifices his unborn child to 48 demons for power. The infant, born with 48 missing body parts, is abandoned by his mother. Years later, ronin Hyakkimaru defeats enemy soldiers using his sword-arms. In a nearby village, young thief Dororo attempts to steal a sword but fails. After helping a starving monk, Dororo finds the man dead. He then steals food from bandits, gets beaten, and thrown into a river. Hyakkimaru saves him, and a spirit emerges to consume the bandit leader. Hyakkimaru destroys the spirit. Dororo wishes to follow him, but Hyakkimaru reveals his fake eyes to frighten him away.

Hibukuro remained behind to cut the magistrate’s house foundations, causing it to collapse and burn, killing everyone inside. Ojiya fled with Dororo but soon encountered Hibukuro’s bandits, who had been taken over by the treacherous Itachi.

In the present, Dororo’s fever finally breaks.

Seeking human blood, Dororo assaults an old man and his daughter Osushi at a temple, but Osushi uses a talisman to stop him. A village-wide warning circulates regarding a child killer. Osushi travels to an inn for food, where she encounters her brother, Tanosuke Niki. He has been absent for 5 years after serving as an ashigaru soldier and is solely focused on locating Dororo to reclaim the cursed weapon.

Reluctantly obeying, he wielded Nihil in battles, allowing it to develop a bloodlust. Villagers burn the hut under Tanosuke's direction, but Hyakkimaru rescues Dororo. Despite Hyakkimaru's warnings, villagers ignore him until Tanosuke kills a couple. Hyakkimaru challenges Tanosuke to a fight, which continues despite Tanosuke's wounds. Realizing his defeat, Tanosuke commits suicide with the sword, which consumes his blood. The demon dissipates as Tanosuke dies. At his grave, Hyakkimaru recovers an eye, gaining sight for the first time, while Dororo vows never to wield a sword again.

Dororo follows Nota into an icy cave containing frozen, faceless people. Hakumen Fudō’s mountain dogs attack, dragging the ascetic inside. Dororo attempts to rescue him, but the cave entrance vanishes, and Hakumen Fudō claims it was a dream. Dororo sleeps while Hakumen Fudō returns to find the ascetic faceless, feeding a frozen body to her dogs. The ascetic’s face appears on the Lord Fudō statue, but he demands another face, which she promises to provide from a child.

Hyakkimaru cuts off the statue's head, revealing it is merely a rock covered in mold. As they depart, Dororo floats an offering downstream for Hakumen Fudo.

In the ensuing conflict, Dororo topples a stone monument, freeing Hitokuchi-kajiri, also known as Kajirinkon. This human-eating monster originated from the endless greed of a cruel headman after his death. Kajirinkon pursues Dororo and the Amanojaku to a five-storied pagoda. There, they defeat the demon by setting the building on fire, ending the threat posed by these supernatural entities.

Later, the trunk splits after floating downstream, releasing the woodcutter and Hyakkimaru. The demon inhabiting the tree reveals itself. Although the tree appears invulnerable, Hyakkimaru identifies its weakness and throws a spear into the spot housing the demon. This action kills the demon and causes the tree to burst into flames.
