Fei Cui encounters Hiroto, an artist painting The Happy Prince, while stealing an emerald. She displays Sarah Bernhardt’s Cleopatra bracelet at her Jade Shop, angering Fujita. Intrigued by Hiroto, Fei Cui discovers he is a gigolo and provides him food and lodging, exhibiting his work. During this time, Fei Cui begins losing her eyesight. Hiroto visits her apartment with his final painting, comforting her before they spend the night together. He departs the next morning, taking the emerald. Fei Cui’s vision subsequently returns, a change Fujita attributes to the gem’s absence. Finally, Hiroto discards the emerald into the sea as a swallow flies overhead.
