Fujita travels to Paris for art purchases while Sara discovers an unsent letter in a gallery frame. She journeys to Paris to deliver it, intersecting with Fujita’s business. Their investigation reveals the letter was written around Valentine's Day 20 years earlier by a man known as The Clown, identified by a cheek birthmark. He addressed it to a young woman he met at a bar, where they exchanged envelopes without speaking before he was shot. Fujita and Sara locate the recipient, who destroys the letter to avoid dwelling on the past. However, the envelope contained a beautiful ring that causes her to weep. Fujita later realizes the stamp on the ashes was rare and valuable.
