There, he meets Mitamura Sayoko, who accuses him of black market dealings, and Max Watson, who is conducting the sale. Fujita becomes interested in a Monet haystack painting, End of Summer Morning, and negotiates with Kain Aubrey to act as his broker. Aubrey sets a $10 million limit for the work, which was previously sold cheaply to Bill Travers. During the auction, Sara bids for Fujita, pushing the price to $30 million to defeat Travers. Ultimately, Kain Aubrey purchases the painting, promising to donate it to the MET upon his death.

He recalls many years ago when he was hired to assist the prisoner and tattooist Shimoda Tappei to paint a fresco on the ceiling. Known as Tatsu the Michelangelo, Shimoda immediately gives Fujita the unpleasant job of removing the old plaster in the oppressive heat of summer. Shimoda had studied in Italy and he shows Fujita the complex steps in creating a fresco. During the painting of his design, Shimoda takes ill, but insists on finishing the work. Back in the present, Mitamura arrives with the intention of saving the fresco prior to demolition of the building, however Fujita is now the owner, and agrees to it being destroyed according to the wishes of Shimoda who has died. Shimoda believed that art like a tattoo has a limited life and a finite period of existence.

Fujita and Sara investigate a mysterious unsent letter in Paris
Apr 10, 2005Fujita travels to Paris for art purchases while Sara discovers an unsent letter in a gallery frame. She journeys to Paris to deliver it, intersecting with Fujita’s business. Their investigation reveals the letter was written around Valentine's Day 20 years earlier by a man known as The Clown, identified by a cheek birthmark. He addressed it to a young woman he met at a bar, where they exchanged envelopes without speaking before he was shot. Fujita and Sara locate the recipient, who destroys the letter to avoid dwelling on the past. However, the envelope contained a beautiful ring that causes her to weep. Fujita later realizes the stamp on the ashes was rare and valuable.

After Dalem is warned about Peters, Fujita shoots him with a fake gun. It is later revealed Fujita acted for the dying collector, who promised to donate the restored painting to a museum.

The owner complains about Ramos, who was formerly engaged to his daughter Marian, while celebrating the purchase of framed ancient map fragments. He subsequently collapses and is hospitalized. Ramos and Marian begin selling the antique maps, and Ramos discovers a fragment he suspects is a treasure map. He hires Fujita to repair it for fifty thousand dollars. While Ramos dreams of adventure, Marian considers marriage and attempts to destroy the map. Fujita determines the fragment is part of an ancient Archimedes mechanical planetarium, which holds value as a treasure itself. Ramos abandons the project to continue his treasure hunting, leaving Fujita to complete the restoration and visit the owner in the hospital.

May 22, 2005Souami, also known as Shinsou, was a watercolor painter during the Muromachi period, and served the 8th shogun of the Ashikaga shogunate. In the present, a Space Shuttle carrying Japanese astronaut Sekine-Jun is about to be launched and he recalls the time years ago when he and Fujita studied art at college. Although Sekine was skilled with watercolors and had to manage the family art gallery, his dream was to be an astronomer. He asked Fujita for funding, and promised to create a painting for him. At the same time, Fujita is coerced into guiding the international movie director, Basso, around Kyoto. Basso is unimpressed with Japanese culture until Fujita takes him to see a six-panel ink painting across folding screens by Shinsou. Meanwhile, in space, Sekine uses freeze-dried coffee dissolved in water to create a unique Wabi-sabi painting for Fujita, who is not going to sell it.
