The Count organizes a reception for the Morcerfs, Danglars, and Villeforts at his newly acquired estate in Auteuil, Boulogne. During the event, he introduces the Marquis Andrea Cavalcanti to the guests. The Count claims that an evil aura emanates from a specific room in the mansion and suggests that his guests form search parties to reach it. Later, he reveals his debilitated disease to Albert, explaining that he contracted it while in space. He asks Albert to keep this condition a secret from the others, and Albert agrees to maintain the confidentiality.
