Hohenheim deceives Wendelin into agreeing to a political marriage with Elize. Panicked by the prospect, Wendelin learns from Erich that nobles often do not meet their fiancés until the wedding. To manage his household, he hires Erwin, an unemployed adventurer who becomes his retainer. Seeking clarity, Wendelin visits Hohenheim’s estate and finds Elize is not opposed to the union. Louise and Lina, discovering Erwin’s role, plan to become Wendelin’s mistresses after the marriage. During a dinner invitation, the butler advises providing an engagement ring. Wendelin selects a modest ring made of magic-storing crystal, ideal for Elize’s healing abilities. He confesses his insecurity regarding his dragon-slaying reputation, prompting Elize to develop feelings for him. Hohenheim notes Wendelin’s unusual nature, while Wendelin remains distracted by his longing for Japanese soy sauce.
