The Elric brothers discover that the guards are souls bound to empty armor. Edward fights Number 48, a serial killer called Slicer, but his automail arm fails because Winry forgot a small bolt. He faces two brothers where the younger controls the body. Edward uses Scar's destruction technique to win but refuses to kill them, seeing Al in their situation. Meanwhile, Al learns that Number 66 is Barry the Chopper. Barry suggests Al never truly existed and was just a doll made for Ed. Al contemplates this possibility and recalls that Ed was afraid to tell him something.
