The brothers decide to follow Scar to find clues about the philosopher's stone, bringing Winry along because Rush Valley, a town famous for automail shops, lies on their path. Meanwhile, Hughes investigates the fifth laboratory and uncovers a link to the Ishbal war. He confronts suspect Juliet Douglas but is attacked by Lust. After escaping the two women, Hughes attempts to call Mustang from a telephone booth but is ambushed by Envy, who first disguises himself as Ross and then takes Gracia's form to kill him. Hughes is posthumously promoted to brigadier general. A flashback reveals Mustang and Hughes previously conspired to prevent the Ishbal tragedy from recurring.
