A flashback spanning to episode nine details the Elrics' early alchemy training under their absent father, Hohenheim of Light. After demonstrating their skills to friend Winry Rockbell and mother Trisha, the brothers lose her to sudden illness and vow to resurrect her. They train under an unnamed alchemist before attempting human transmutation, which fails catastrophically. Edward loses his left leg, and Alphonse loses his entire body. To save his brother, Edward sacrifices his right arm to bind Alphonse's soul to a suit of armor. Roy Mustang arrives after receiving a letter regarding their father, witnessing the aftermath. He attempts to recruit them as state alchemists, but Pinako Rockbell orders him away. Edward pays for automail limbs and decides to become a state alchemist to access the state library and restore Alphonse. The brothers burn their childhood home in Resembool to move forward.
