Sophie’s mother visits and demands she sabotage Lynn’s saddle to cause a fall. Sophie refuses, discarding the knife in a lake before accidentally falling into a ditch and injuring her ankle. Her squirrel companion seeks help and guides Lynn to the scene. After being rescued and waking in her bed, Sophie’s mother blames Lynn for the incident. Sophie defends her friend and declares her hatred toward her mother. Consequently, her mother departs, and Sophie is sent back to France to reside in a dormitory. Before leaving, Sophie gives her ribbon to her squirrel companion.
