Mary contacts Lynn at the tower to discuss her father's arson incident, promising to speak with her grandfather if Lynn competes against Vivian. The two girls race at daybreak while Isabelle, Jim, the principal, Eric, Peggy, and Philip observe. Lynn's strap breaks because Mary cut it. Vivian becomes distracted by the sun when Edward appears. Both competitors tie initially, but Vivian subsequently falls.
